Minneapolis grew up around St. Anthony Falls, the only major natural waterfall on the Mississippi River. The falls powered sawmills and then flour mills, and for decades the city led the United States in flour milling. The old mill district along the riverbank is still readable on the map, next to the curve of the Stone Arch Bridge, a former railway crossing.
Away from the river the city is built on a broad grid. It is broken up in the southwest by a chain of lakes, including Bde Maka Ska and Lake of the Isles, each ringed by parkland and paths. The Grand Rounds, a system of parks and parkways, links these lakes with the river and Minnehaha Falls in a continuous loop around the city.
Downtown is compact, and its buildings are connected by an extensive skyway network built for the long winters. A Minneapolis map poster brings the parts together. It shows the river gorge, the dense downtown grid, and the lakes set like open spaces in the street pattern, with St. Paul, its twin city, lying to the east.
The falls and the historic mill ruins beside them mark the city's birthplace, with the Stone Arch Bridge curving across the river just below.
Several lakes in the southwest of the city sit within parkland. Their smooth open shapes interrupt the grid and give the map its most recognisable feature.
A parkway system links lakes, creeks and the Mississippi around the city. On the map it reads as a continuous line of park corridors and winding roads.
