Antananarivo is built at about 1,280 metres across a cluster of hills in Madagascar's central highlands. The map reflects that terrain closely: streets wind and double back up the slopes, long stairways connect the upper and lower town, and the flat valley floors around the city are still largely given over to rice paddies, which appear as open spaces veined with small channels.
The name is usually translated as the city of the thousand, after a garrison of a thousand warriors said to have guarded it. On the highest ridge stands the Rova, the royal compound of the Merina kingdom, whose rulers made the city their capital. It became the capital of Madagascar as a whole and has remained so since independence.
Below the ridges, the Avenue de l'Indépendance runs straight along a valley floor toward the Analakely market, and Lake Anosy lies to the south, its island monument linked to the shore. An Antananarivo map poster shows how the city climbs and descends, with tight hilltop lanes contrasting sharply against the flat, geometric pattern of the paddies below.

A small lake south of the centre with an island monument joined to the shore by a causeway, a clean open shape among the city's denser blocks.
This broad avenue follows the valley floor in a straight line from the railway station toward Analakely, one of the few long straight streets in a city shaped by hills.

Ko e hā ʻa Antananarivo
Antananarivo is a map for Malagasy families at home and abroad, and for those who have lived in or visited the capital. The combination of hilltop lanes and flat rice fields gives it a texture unlike any other city, which translates well into a black-and-white print.
Personalise the title in Malagasy, French or English, add a date or name in the subtitle, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper softens the steep slopes into a quieter image.
