Anticosti Island lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Quebec's Côte-Nord, where the river opens into the sea. It is more than two hundred kilometres long but only a fraction of that from north to south, so from above it looks like a long, smooth leaf of land. The coast is low and edged with limestone shelves, and the interior is a forested plateau with scattered lakes and bogs.
There are almost no settlements. Port-Menier, the only village, sits near the western end, and a long gravel road runs east along the island. Rivers have cut deep canyons into the plateau on their way to the sea. This gives an Anticosti Island map poster fine, vein-like detail across an otherwise open interior.
In 1895 the French chocolate maker Henri Menier bought the whole island and brought in white-tailed deer, which now vastly outnumber the people. In 2023 Anticosti was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for its unusually complete fossil record from the end of the Ordovician and the start of the Silurian, when life recovered from one of Earth's great extinctions.
The island's only village, on a bay near the western tip, founded in the Menier era. It is the one cluster of streets on an otherwise nearly empty island.
Many rivers cross the limestone plateau, some through steep canyons and over waterfalls such as the Vauréal falls. On the map they are fine lines draining toward both coasts.
Wide, shallow limestone platforms edge much of the shoreline. Together with fog and strong currents, they wrecked so many ships that the island was long called the graveyard of the gulf.

Ko e hā ʻa Anticosti Island
Anticosti draws hunters, anglers, geologists and people who like the idea of a vast island with a single village. Its long, calm outline reads clearly even at the smallest print size, and the fine web of rivers gives the empty interior quiet detail.
Set the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a season on the island or a family connection. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. For $9 you get digital files in six sizes, each as a 300 DPI PNG and a print-ready PDF.
