Aracataca lies in the Magdalena Department of northern Colombia, on the lowland plain between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Ciénaga Grande. The town is laid out on a mostly regular grid, bordered by the Aracataca River and crossed by the railway line that once carried bananas from the region's plantations to the coast.
On a map, the town reads as a compact block of streets with the river curving along one side and the straight railway cutting through. Beyond them, the land opens into plantations and farmland, with the foothills of the Sierra Nevada rising to the east.
Aracataca is the birthplace of Gabriel García Márquez, and the town inspired Macondo, the fictional setting of One Hundred Years of Solitude. An Aracataca map poster is a way to hold that literary place in its real form: the grid, the river, the railway and the banana country around them.
The river runs along the edge of town, a winding natural boundary that contrasts with the straight streets beside it.
The railway crosses the town in a straight line, a reminder of the banana trade that shaped the region's history and García Márquez's fiction.
The centre follows a simple grid of blocks around the main square, compact and easy to read on a poster.

Ko e hā ʻa Aracataca
Readers of García Márquez often want to see the real town behind Macondo. This map is a quiet tribute to his work, and a meaningful piece for anyone from Aracataca or the Magdalena region.
