Argyroúpoli is a suburb in the southern part of the Athens urban area, now part of the municipality of Elliniko–Argyroupoli. Its streets spread across gently rising ground toward the lower slopes of Mount Hymettus, and from above it forms a close, fairly regular grid of residential blocks.
The suburb was founded in the 1920s by refugees from Argyroupoli in Pontus, the historic city now called Gümüşhane in Turkey, and it took its name from their home town. That origin remains part of the local identity. Today Argyroupoli is served by a station on Athens Metro Line 2.
