Arriaga is at the western end of the Chiapas coast, where the narrow coastal plain meets the first ridges of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. Like many Mexican towns, it is laid out as a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza. On the map it forms a neat patch of squares, with mountains rising inland and flat land stretching away toward the ocean.
Arriaga grew as a railway town, and the tracks are still one of the clearest features of its layout, running along the edge of the grid with yards and sidings beside them. The town lies on the route between the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the rest of coastal Chiapas. As a result, the highway and the rail line give the Arriaga map poster strong directional accents.
The region is exposed to the strong northerly winds that blow across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which affect local life more than any map can show. What the map does show is the shift from dense streets to open pasture and farmland. Creeks come down from the sierra, and low coastal land and lagoons lie further toward the Pacific.

Railway corridor
The rail line that shaped the town's growth runs past the grid in a long, straight band. Its wider strip of yards and tracks anchors one side of the composition.
