Arzamas stands in the south of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, on a high bank above the Tesha River. It was founded in the sixteenth century as a fortress on the eastern frontier of Muscovy and grew into a prosperous trading town. Its centre still has the compact pattern of that era, with streets converging on a hilltop square and the river valley and water meadows opening below.
Arzamas was once known for having an unusual number of churches for a town its size. The great Resurrection Cathedral, completed in the nineteenth century, still dominates Cathedral Square. The writer Arkady Gaidar spent his childhood here, and the town was also known for its geese, a local breed that became a kind of emblem.

Below the high bank, the Tesha winds through a broad valley of meadows. It forms a soft band of open space beside the built-up town.
Railway lines
