Atherton is a town in the borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, lying between Leigh, Tyldesley and Hindley. Its map is the classic pattern of a Lancashire industrial town: a central market street, rows of terraced houses running off it at tight angles, and later housing estates filling in toward the edges. The railway line to Manchester runs along the north side.
The town was historically known as Chowbent, a name still used locally and kept by Chowbent Chapel. It grew through nail-making, then coal mining and cotton spinning, and the density of its older streets reflects that period. Much of the industry has gone, but the street pattern it created is still clear from above.
An Atherton map poster shows those close rows of terraces giving way to looser post-war roads and, beyond them, fields and former colliery land. It is a map with a working-town rhythm, and it makes a fitting print for anyone who grew up in the Chowbent streets or still lives there.
