Aurangabad, officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, sits in a broad valley on the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra. Low hills rise to the north. The Kham River passes the old city, and the historic core was once enclosed by walls pierced by many gates. That history earned it the name City of Gates, and several gates still stand at the edges of the old quarter.

The Mughal tomb sits in a symmetrical walled garden. Its rectangular enclosure and axial paths are clearly visible on the northern side of the city.
