Barshi is in Solapur district in southern Maharashtra, on the dry, open ground of the Deccan plateau. It grew as a trading town for the farming country around it. The map shows a crowded old centre of short, irregular streets, surrounded by newer areas where the roads are wider and the blocks more regular.
The town is known for the Bhagwant temple, dedicated to Vishnu, which draws pilgrims from across the region. Its position near the heart of the old town has helped shape the streets around it. Beyond the town, straight roads lead toward Solapur and other district towns, and the farmland between them shows up as open, empty space.
