Aurora, Colorado, stretches east from Denver across the high plains and covers parts of three counties. From above, it is dominated by the American section grid: major arterials spaced about a mile apart, with the squares between them filled by curving subdivision streets, cul-de-sacs and parks. Toward the east, the grid opens up into undeveloped prairie, and new neighbourhoods keep advancing into it.
Water and open space break the pattern. Cherry Creek State Park and its reservoir sit on the city's south-western side, and Aurora Reservoir lies farther east. In the north-west, the former Fitzsimons Army base has become the Anschutz Medical Campus, a large academic and hospital complex. Highways such as I-70, I-225 and E-470 trace long lines across the sheet.
