Ayamonte sits in the far southwest of Andalusia, in the province of Huelva, at the point where the Guadiana River meets the Atlantic. Across the water lies Vila Real de Santo António in Portugal. From above, the old town fills the riverbank with close-set streets, and the waterfront faces straight across to the neighbouring country.
The landscape around Ayamonte is shaped by water. Salt marshes and tidal channels spread towards the coast, and the beaches of Isla Canela line the shore to the south. To the north, the International Guadiana Bridge carries the motorway between Spain and Portugal. A ferry still crosses the river between the two towns.
