Setúbal lies on the northern shore of the Sado estuary, south of Lisbon. From above, the city stretches along the water, with a dense historic centre near the port and newer districts climbing the hills behind it. To the west rise the steep slopes of the Serra da Arrábida, and across the estuary lies the Tróia peninsula, a long, narrow sand spit reached by ferry.
The city has a long tradition as a fishing port, once known for sardine canning, and is still associated with fresh fish and Moscatel wine from the surrounding region. The Sado estuary is home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins. The Fort of São Filipe stands on a hill above the city, overlooking the water.
