Viseu grew around a hilltop where its cathedral and old quarter still stand. From above you can see a knot of narrow medieval streets at the summit, with newer avenues and gardens spreading down the slopes. A series of ring roads circles the city at increasing distances, giving the map a clear set of concentric layers around the historic centre.
The city is the capital of the Dão wine region, and vineyards and pine woods surround it. It is also associated with Vasco Fernandes, the Renaissance painter known as Grão Vasco, whose work is held in the museum beside the cathedral. The small Pavia River winds along the city's northern side.
