Vigo spreads along the southern shore of the Ría de Vigo, a long, sheltered inlet on the Galician coast. The city rises sharply from the water. The old quarter of Casco Vello runs down to the port, and streets climb in terraces toward the hill of O Castro, topped by a seventeenth-century fortress. On the map, roads that follow the contours mix with a denser grid on flatter ground.
Port installations take up almost the whole waterfront, including one of Europe's largest fishing ports and extensive shipyards. To the east, the Rande Bridge spans the narrowest part of the ría. To the west, the coast opens onto sandy beaches such as Samil before turning toward the ocean.
At the mouth of the ría lie the Cíes Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park.
