Baixo Guandu sits on the Rio Doce in the northwest of Espírito Santo, close to the state line with Minas Gerais. Its name refers to the lower course of the Guandu River, which joins the Rio Doce here. On a map the rivers dominate. The town's streets run parallel to the river and then climb toward the hills behind. They form a long settlement that is shallow from front to back.
