Baizi lies in the western part of Chongqing Municipality, where the Sichuan Basin rises and falls in low, closely spaced hills. The landscape shapes the town. Streets gather on the flatter ground in valley bottoms and along gentle ridges, and the surrounding slopes are divided into small fields and terraces.
Like many settlements in this part of China, Baizi is a local centre for the surrounding countryside. Its role is to provide markets, schools and services to the farming villages in the hills. The roads that connect it to nearby towns wind around the slopes instead of running straight, following the contours of the land.
