Balashov stands on the right bank of the Khopyor, a tributary of the Don, in the west of Saratov Oblast. From above, the river is the strongest line on the map. It swings past the town in wide loops, and its floodplain is marked by oxbows, meadows and strips of woodland. The town rises on the drier bank beside it, laid out as a regular grid of long, straight streets.
The grid comes from the town's planned growth after it was granted town status in the late eighteenth century. Streets cross at right angles and form a clear, readable pattern of rectangular blocks. Later, the railway added a second axis. Its tracks and yards cut across the plan and pulled industry and newer housing toward the station side of town.
A Balashov map poster sets these layers side by side: the ordered centre, the rail corridor and the irregular, organic lines of the Khopyor valley. The contrast works well in monochrome. The streets read as fine geometry, while the river and its old channels form softer shapes along one side. It is a quiet, balanced composition that is typical of a southern Russian provincial town.
The Khopyor bends past the town in broad meanders. Old channels and floodplain lakes are scattered across the lowland, which gives one side of the poster a flowing, natural texture.
The historic centre follows a planned grid of long, parallel streets and regular blocks. It is the most orderly part of the drawing and easy to trace from edge to edge.
Rail lines and yards cross the town at an angle to the grid. They add a strong diagonal and mark the districts that grew up around the station.

Ko e hā ʻa Balashov
Balashov often ends up on the walls of people who grew up there, served there or have family along the Khopyor. Grid and river together make a calm, graphic image. It suits a living room just as well as an office, and it makes a thoughtful present for someone who has moved away.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are all editable, so the poster can carry a name, a year or a personal note. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download HD files for $9, or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
