Banfora is the capital of the Cascades Region in the green southwest of Burkina Faso, near the borders with Côte d'Ivoire and Mali. From above, the town has a clear, orderly plan. Roads cross at regular intervals, the railway between Abidjan and Ouagadougou runs through it, and wide plantation fields spread across the land around it. The rectangular fields form a geometric pattern that is rare in the country.
Those fields belong to the sugar industry that has shaped the town's economy for decades. The wider area is known for its natural sights. The Karfiguéla waterfalls, the sandstone Domes of Fabedougou and Lake Tengrela, famous for its hippos, are all a short distance away. A Banfora map poster frames the town at the centre of this landscape, where farming and geology sit close together.
In black and white, Banfora's streets appear as a neat, open grid, and the plantation blocks around it add a second, larger rhythm. The railway ties the two together with a single line. It is a restrained composition, and a good fit for anyone who knows the region's red earth and green fields firsthand.
The Abidjan–Ouagadougou railway passes straight through Banfora. On the map it is a firm diagonal that the town's grid of streets grew up around.
Large rectangular fields surround the town. Their straight edges form a patchwork that frames the urban grid and marks the sugar cane landscape of the southwest.
The town's roads cross at regular intervals and leave generous blocks between them. The result is a calm, legible pattern that prints clearly at every size.
