Bangaon lies in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, a few kilometres from the border with Bangladesh. The Ichamati River meanders through and around the town, and its looping course is the most expressive shape on the map, curving past streets, ponds and fields in the flat Bengal plain.
The town is best known as the last major stop before Petrapole, one of the busiest land crossings between India and Bangladesh. Much of the road trade between the two countries passes this way. A suburban railway line from Sealdah in Kolkata ends here and brings a steady flow of daily travellers.

The main road runs east toward the Petrapole border crossing. It is the town's principal artery and an important trade route between two countries.
