Baraguá lies in the flat, open countryside of Ciego de Ávila province in central Cuba, a region long dominated by sugarcane. The town grew around a sugar mill, and from above its streets form a modest grid close to the mill and the railway, surrounded by fields that stretch far in every direction. Few natural features interrupt the plan.
In the early twentieth century, workers from the English-speaking Caribbean, including Jamaica and Barbados, came to the region to work in the cane fields and mills, and many settled in Baraguá. Their descendants have kept parts of that heritage alive, including an annual celebration of emancipation, which makes the town distinctive within Cuba.
