Barpāli lies in the Bargarh district of western Odisha, in the broad, flat agricultural country near the Mahanadi basin. From above, the town is a compact cluster of narrow lanes and closely built houses, with a few main roads leading out to the nearby villages and market towns. Beyond the edges, the landscape opens into paddy fields and irrigation tanks.
The Bargarh district is widely known for Sambalpuri handloom weaving, with its distinctive tie-and-dye cotton and silk textiles, and weaving communities are part of the life of the towns across the area. Barpāli also appears in the history of rural development: in the 1950s it was the site of a long-running village development project supported by the American Friends Service Committee.

Irrigation tanks are a characteristic feature of the western Odisha plains. They appear as clear, rounded or irregular shapes among the streets and fields around the town.
