Batouri is the main town of the Kadey department in Cameroon's East Region, a sparsely populated area of forest and savanna near the border with the Central African Republic. On a map it looks like a loose network of roads over gently rolling ground. The main routes cross near the centre, and the neighbourhoods spread out along them.
The area around Batouri is known for artisanal gold mining, which draws workers from across the region and shapes the local economy.
