Benešov lies south of Prague in Central Bohemia, on the railway toward České Budějovice. It is best known for Konopiště, the castle just outside town that became the country residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in 1914 set off the First World War. The castle's large park and ponds sit close to Benešov's western edge.
The town itself centres on a square with streets leading off in several directions, surrounded by later housing estates and industrial areas. The railway cuts a firm line along one side, while fields, woods and fishponds fill the countryside around, typical of this part of Bohemia.
