Benevento sits in the interior of Campania, on a raised ridge where the Calore and Sabato rivers meet. On the map, the historic centre stretches along this high ground, with Corso Garibaldi as its main axis, while newer districts spread across the lower land and along the rivers.
The city has a long history visible in its layout. The Arch of Trajan, one of the best preserved Roman arches, stands at the edge of the old town, and the church of Santa Sofia is part of the UNESCO site honouring the Lombards in Italy.
