Bennekom lies in Gelderland, part of the municipality of Ede, just north of Wageningen. On a map it is a village of two landscapes. To the east the streets meet the forested sandy ridge of the Veluwe, while to the west the ground drops into the Binnenveld, a low, open area of meadows and drainage ditches. The village itself fills the transition between them.
Unlike the strict grids of many Dutch polder towns, Bennekom has a looser, organic plan. Older lanes curve through the centre, and later residential neighbourhoods fill in around them with crescents, cul-de-sacs and green strips. West of the village, the low Binnenveld is crossed by long, straight ditches and field boundaries, a flat geometric contrast to the curving streets of the village.
