Beveren lies in the Waasland, on the left bank of the Scheldt opposite Antwerp. The map divides clearly into two halves. To the south and west are the town centre and surrounding villages, with compact streets, church squares and farmland crossed by long straight roads. To the north and east, docks, locks and container terminals of the Port of Antwerp have been cut deep into the old polder landscape.
The municipality takes in the port villages of Kallo and Doel, and the Doel nuclear power station stands on the Scheldt shore at its northern edge. Much of the surrounding land was reclaimed from tidal marsh over centuries. The dikes, drainage ditches and polder roads still follow that history, even where cranes and storage tanks now fill the horizon.
A Beveren map poster makes that contrast unusually easy to read. The large rectangular basins of the Waaslandhaven look like geometric blocks set into an older field pattern, while the village cores keep their small irregular street plans. The winding line of the Scheldt closes the composition to the east, where the river bends towards the Netherlands and the open estuary.
Long rectangular harbour basins and lock complexes on the left bank, the most striking geometric shapes on the map and a clear break from the surrounding polder fields.
The broad tidal river forms the eastern edge, with dikes along its banks and Doel sitting almost on the water at the northern bend.
Straight drainage ditches and narrow roads divide the farmland into long plots, a reminder that much of this ground was reclaimed from the estuary.

Ko e hā ʻa Beveren
Beveren tells the story of Flanders' relationship with water: reclaimed land, dikes and one of Europe's largest ports built into the fields. It makes a good gift for someone from the Waasland, or for anyone who works along the Scheldt and knows these docks from the inside.
