Béziers stands on a ridge above the river Orb in the Languedoc, with the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire at its highest point. From above, the old town is a tight knot of lanes spilling down the slope towards the river, where the medieval Pont Vieux crosses the water. The contrast between the dense hilltop and the open river valley shapes the whole map.
The Canal du Midi passes the city to the south and west, and one of its best-known features is here: the Fonserannes locks, a staircase of locks that lifts boats up the hillside.
