Biysk lies on the Biya River in Altai Krai, in southern Siberia, where the flat steppe begins to rise toward the Altai Mountains. On a map the city stretches along both banks of the river, with the older centre on the right bank and newer districts spreading across the flatland. Downstream, the Biya meets the Katun, and together they form the Ob, one of the great rivers of Siberia.
The town was founded in 1709 as a fortress on the orders of Peter the Great, to guard Russia's frontier in southern Siberia. Today it is best known as the starting point of the Chuysky Trakt, the road that leads south through the Altai Mountains toward Mongolia. Biysk also holds the status of a science city, with research and industry linked to chemistry.
