Rubtsovsk lies in the south-west of Altai Krai on the Alei River, not far from the border with Kazakhstan. The land around it is open steppe, flat and heavily farmed. On a map the city stands out as a dense block of streets inside a patchwork of large fields. The river curves past the town, and its wooded banks add the only soft line to an otherwise straight-edged plan.
The city began in 1892 as a settlers' village, named after one of the first arrivals, Rubtsov. It grew once the railway arrived in the early twentieth century. In the Soviet period it became an industrial centre, and the Altai Tractor Plant, founded in 1942 with equipment evacuated during the war, was among its largest employers. The rail yards and factory grounds still form large blocks on the map.
The residential districts follow wide, straight streets, and several broad avenues cross the whole city. A Rubtsovsk map poster shows this plan clearly: long parallel lines, the loop of the Alei, and the change from city blocks to fields stretching toward the horizon. The design has little decoration, which suits a place built around work, rail and the steppe.
The river curves past the city in a gentle loop, lined with trees and floodplain. It is the main natural feature in a landscape of level steppe and large fields.
Former factory grounds and rail yards form large, regular blocks on the map. They are a clear trace of the city's Soviet industrial growth.
Straight, broad streets run across the city in long parallel lines. They give Rubtsovsk a clear, open plan that reads easily at any poster size.
