Pavlodar lies on the right bank of the Irtysh, one of the great rivers of Central Asia and Siberia. On the map the city stretches along the river, with a regular grid of streets and avenues running inland from the waterfront. On the opposite bank, the floodplain is a wide area of channels, islands and meadows that stays largely unbuilt.
The city centre is laid out in long, straight blocks, a pattern that continues into the newer districts further from the river. Large industrial zones, including aluminium production and oil refining, occupy the edges of the city and are visible as blocks of different texture. Beyond them the flat steppe stretches away in every direction.
A Pavlodar map poster shows the clear contrast between a planned grid and a natural river landscape. The city traces its origins to a fortified outpost founded in 1720, and today the Mashkhur Zhusup mosque, with its large blue dome, is one of its best-known buildings. From above, the Irtysh gives the whole map its direction.
The river runs along the western side of the city, broad and slow, with bridges linking the centre to the opposite bank.
Across the river, a wide area of channels, islands and meadows gives the map a soft, organic texture next to the grid.
Long, straight streets and regular blocks cover the centre and newer districts, forming the orderly structure of the city.
