Boca Raton lies on Florida's southeast coast, in Palm Beach County. From east to west its map reads in bands. A narrow barrier island lines the Atlantic, the Intracoastal Waterway and Lake Boca Raton run behind it, and the mainland spreads west in a growing network of canals, lakes and curving subdivision streets.
Much of the city's look dates from the 1920s, when architect Addison Mizner planned a Mediterranean-style resort town. His influence remains in the historic resort and the architecture downtown. The Boca Raton Inlet cuts through the island to the sea, and Florida Atlantic University has its main campus in the city.
