Borūjerd lies in the north of Lorestan province, on a wide, well-watered plain enclosed by the ranges of the Zagros mountains. The city's Jameh Mosque dates back to the Seljuk period and is one of the notable historic mosques of western Iran. Borūjerd has long been a regional centre for trade and religious learning, and it is associated with Grand Ayatollah Hossein Borujerdi, one of the most influential Shia scholars of the twentieth century, who was born here.
