Boutilimitt lies in the Trarza region of southwestern Mauritania, inland from Nouakchott along the main road heading east into the country. The town is surrounded by sand, and the dunes of the Trarza shape the landscape in long, parallel ridges.
Boutilimitt has long been known as a centre of Islamic learning in the region, with a respected tradition of scholarship. It is also the birthplace of Moktar Ould Daddah, Mauritania's first president.
