Bulanık lies on the high plateau of Muş province in eastern Turkey, on a broad plain north of the city of Muş. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets on level ground, with farmland extending in all directions and mountain ranges rising at the edges of the plain.
The region is known for long, snowy winters and short summers, and its landscape of wide plains and surrounding heights is typical of eastern Anatolia. The Murat river, one of the main sources of the Euphrates, flows through the wider area, and smaller streams cross the fields near town.
