Bussum lies in the Gooi region of North Holland, southeast of Amsterdam. It grew in the late nineteenth century once the railway made it easy to reach the city, and many of its streets were laid out for spacious villas with gardens. On a map, that history shows as winding avenues and large green plots rather than a strict Dutch grid.
Since 2016 Bussum has been part of the municipality of Gooise Meren, together with Naarden and Muiden. Right next door is the fortified town of Naarden, with its famous star-shaped ramparts and moats. Naarden fortress
The star-shaped fortifications of neighbouring Naarden, with their bastions and moats, lie next to Bussum and are one of the most recognisable forms in Dutch mapping.
