Buturlinovka lies in the southeast of Voronezh Oblast, on the Osered River, in the black-earth steppe of southern Russia. The town was founded in the eighteenth century as a settlement on land belonging to Count Buturlin, from whom it takes its name. On a map it shows an unusually regular plan of long, parallel streets and large rectangular blocks.
