Ko e mape
Callao sits where the coast of Lima's metropolitan area bends out into the Pacific. On the map its most striking shape is La Punta, a slim peninsula that reaches west into the ocean, with the long, bare outline of San Lorenzo Island just beyond it. The harbour lies in the shelter of that headland, and its breakwaters and piers form sharp geometric lines along the shore.
Callao has been Peru's main port since colonial times, and the star-shaped Real Felipe Fortress, built in the eighteenth century to defend it, still stands near the waterfront. Inland, Jorge Chávez International Airport, the country's main air gateway, also lies within Callao's boundaries, so the city handles both sea and air traffic for the capital.

The pentagonal outline of the fortress, the dock basins and the tight streets of Chucuito and La Punta sit against the open sea, while the airport's long runway stretches across the flat land to the north-east. The eighteenth-century fortress near the port has a distinctive pentagonal plan with angled bastions, a geometric shape that stands out clearly among the surrounding blocks.
Breakwaters and dock basins cut straight lines into the coast, while inland the airport runway draws one long stroke across the plain. Together they show Callao's dual role as a gateway.
