Lima lies on a dry coastal plain between the Pacific and the foothills of the Andes. The historic centre sits beside the Rímac River, laid out as a regular grid after Francisco Pizarro founded the city in 1535. From the Plaza Mayor the blocks extend in even squares, a pattern that still defines the core and shows clearly on the map.
South of the centre, the city runs toward the sea through districts such as San Isidro, Miraflores and Barranco, which sit on top of steep cliffs above the Costa Verde. A coastal highway follows the base of the cliffs, while parks line the edge above. Among the streets, adobe platforms such as Huaca Pucllana survive from pre-Inca cultures, forming unusual open shapes.
Lima is one of the largest cities in the world built in a desert; it rarely rains, and a low grey sky covers the coast for much of the winter. Costa Verde cliffs
A long line of cliffs along the bay, running from Chorrillos past Barranco and Miraflores. On the poster it appears as a clean division between the street grid and the ocean.
