Castleford stands where the River Calder flows into the River Aire, in West Yorkshire between Leeds and Pontefract. The map shows the two rivers and the Aire and Calder Navigation looping around the north of the town. The compact centre is surrounded by rows of terraced streets, and newer estates and retail parks spread out towards the motorway. Weirs, locks and old mill sites mark the waterfront.
The Romans built a fort here called Lagentium to guard the river crossing, and much later the town grew on coal, glass, pottery and flour milling. The sculptor Henry Moore was born in Castleford in 1898, and the town is known across rugby league for the Castleford Tigers. A zig-zag footbridge now crosses the Aire beside the historic flour mill.
A Castleford map poster reads almost like a diagram of a northern industrial town. Water curves across the top of the frame, the tight grid of terraces fills the centre, and the larger shapes of reclaimed colliery land and business parks spread out around it. It is a detailed map, and the rivers give it a strong, clear structure.
The two rivers join at the town, with the navigation canal and locks adding a second set of lines that loop around the northern side.
A zig-zag pedestrian bridge crosses the Aire near the old flour mill and weir, linking the town centre to the far bank.
Dense rows of terraced housing around the centre form fine parallel lines typical of the town's industrial growth.
