Chaparral lies in southern Tolima, on the eastern slopes of Colombia's Central Cordillera. The town centre is laid out in a regular grid of blocks, the pattern common to Colombian towns of Spanish origin, but the terrain around it rises quickly. On the map the grid sits within a landscape of ridges, streams and roads that twist to find a way through.
Chaparral is known in Colombia as the birthplace of several national political figures, including presidents Manuel Murillo Toro and Darío Echandía, which has given it a reputation well beyond its size. The surrounding municipality is largely rural, with coffee and other crops grown on the slopes above town.
A Chaparral map poster places the orderly town blocks at the centre and lets the mountain roads and watercourses spread outward. The contrast between the straight streets of the core and the bending lines on the hillsides gives the composition depth, a small Andean town caught between plan and landscape.
The centre follows a regular grid around a main square, a clear and legible pattern that anchors the poster at its heart.
Roads leaving town wind across the slopes of the Central Cordillera, drawn as long curving lines that trace the shape of the terrain.
Chaparral is the birthplace of several Colombian presidents, among them Manuel Murillo Toro and Darío Echandía, a point of local pride in southern Tolima.
