Chawinda lies in the Sialkot district of Pakistani Punjab, close to the border with India. From above, the town is a dense, irregular cluster of lanes around a central market area. Beyond the last houses the land opens into flat farmland, divided into narrow fields and crossed by small roads and irrigation channels that run toward neighbouring villages.
The town is known far beyond its size because of the Battle of Chawinda in 1965, one of the largest tank engagements since the Second World War.
