Chernogolovka lies in the forests northeast of Moscow, and the map shows a town carved out of woodland. Residential blocks and research campuses sit in clearings connected by curving roads, with dense forest pressing in on every side. A reservoir on the edge of town adds a large open shape of water.
The town was established in the 1950s as a centre for scientific research, originally around a chemical physics institute associated with Nobel laureate Nikolai Semyonov. It later grew into a cluster of Academy of Sciences institutes and received the official status of a science town, or naukograd.
