Chiari lies on the flat plain of eastern Lombardy, in the province of Brescia, between the Oglio river and the city of Brescia itself. From above, the historic centre forms a tight, rounded knot of streets. Wider avenues roughly trace the line of the old town edge, and newer districts spread outward in every direction.
The town is known for its civic library and art collections, which were founded on a notable private bequest and are larger than you might expect in a place of this size. The railway between Milan and Venice passes through, adding a firm straight line along one side of the town.
