Chomutov lies in northwestern Bohemia, where the North Bohemian basin meets the steep, wooded slopes of the Ore Mountains. Its medieval centre has a large square, a town hall and a tall town tower. In the twentieth century the town grew considerably with the coal mining and heavy industry of the surrounding region.
The map shows a compact historic core surrounded by later districts, including large housing estates of panel blocks. The Chomutovka stream runs through the town, and to the northwest the ground rises sharply into forest. One of the most distinctive features is Kamencové jezero, the Alum Lake, whose water is naturally rich in minerals. It lies in a park on the edge of town.

Alum Lake
Kamencové jezero is a lake with naturally alum-rich water, surrounded by parkland and paths. It forms a clear patch of water on the edge of the built-up area.

To the north and northwest, the Krušné hory rise steeply. The town's streets give way to forest roads and winding paths as the ground climbs.
