Comalcalco lies on the flat, wet plain of western Tabasco, in the region known as the Chontalpa. There are no hills to bend the streets, so the town spreads in a loose grid of blocks, with highways leading out across farmland toward nearby towns. Water is never far away on a map of this area: streams, drainage channels and wetlands mark the edges of the plain.
The name is tied to one of the more unusual Maya sites. The ruins of Comalcalco were built with fired clay bricks rather than stone, because the alluvial lowlands offered no suitable rock. The surrounding countryside is also known for cacao, grown here on plantations for a very long time, and the region's chocolate is part of its identity.
A Comalcalco map poster captures a lowland town in plain geometry: the central grid, the roads running out toward the plantations, and the scattered clusters of settlement across the plain. It is a quiet, balanced print, and it carries a story about brick temples and cacao that anyone who knows the place will recognise.
The centre is laid out in regular blocks on flat ground, giving the map a steady, even rhythm that loosens toward the outskirts.
Highways and rural roads leave the town in several directions, crossing open farmland and linking it to smaller communities of the Chontalpa.
North of the town lies the archaeological site of Comalcalco, notable for its temples and platforms built from fired brick instead of stone.
