Congonhas lies in the iron-ore country of Minas Gerais, and its map reflects the terrain. Streets rarely run straight; they follow ridges and valleys, bending around slopes and climbing toward the older part of town. The result is an organic, branching pattern that contrasts sharply with the planned grids found in many Brazilian cities.
The town is best known for the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Its churchyard holds twelve soapstone prophets carved by Aleijadinho, and the chapels on the slope below contain his figures of the Passion, among the most important works of Brazilian baroque art.
A Congonhas map poster captures both sides of the place: the historic hill with its sanctuary and the surrounding neighbourhoods that grew with the mining economy. Printed in fine black lines, the curving streets read almost like contour lines, tracing the shape of the land.
The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos crowns a hill above town, with a path of chapels descending the slope toward the streets below.
Roads curl along ridges and valley floors, so the street network looks loose and organic, shaped more by topography than by any planned grid.
Congonhas sits in the Iron Quadrangle of Minas Gerais, and the town's growth around the historic core reflects its long relationship with the region's mines.

Congonhas appeals to anyone who has walked up to Aleijadinho's prophets or has family in the region. Its winding streets make an unusually expressive map, closer to a drawing than a diagram.
