Coroatá is in the interior of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, on the Itapecuru River. The river is one of the main waterways of the state and flows north toward São Luís. The town grew along its banks, and the river is still the most prominent natural line on the map.
The streets form a largely regular grid that extends from the waterfront over flat, low land. The railway between São Luís and Teresina passes through the area, adding a long line that links the town to the coast and the interior. Beyond the built area, the land opens out into farmland, pasture and scrub.
A Coroatá map poster captures a plain, honest town layout. The river curves along one side, the grid of blocks fills the land beside it and a few long roads and a rail line run off into open country. It is a modest map, but its structure is clear and satisfying to look at.
The river runs past the town in gentle curves. It gives the poster its main natural feature and a soft line against the straight streets.
The streets form a largely regular grid of blocks near the river. The pattern loosens toward the edges as the town reaches the countryside.
A railway line crosses the area on its way between the coast and the interior. It forms a long, steady stroke across the map.
