Paço do Lumiar is one of the four municipalities on the island of São Luís, in Maranhão in northern Brazil. It lies east of the state capital and is part of its metropolitan area. On a map, the land is a mix of dense residential estates, open ground and the green outlines of mangrove forest along the tidal creeks.
The coast is shaped by very large tides. Creeks and inlets reach inland, and their edges change from map to map. Between the water and the roads, housing developments have their own small grids. Main roads connect them westward to São Luís.
A Paço do Lumiar map poster shows a young, fast-growing town on an old island. Its outline is shaped by water, and much of the land is still open. The combination of angular estate grids and winding tidal creeks gives the composition a changing, uneven rhythm that is quite different from an inland town.
Winding waterways cut inland from the bay through the mangroves. They make the most organic lines on the map.
Planned residential developments appear as small grids of regular streets. Each one sits at its own angle among the open land.
The municipality shares the island of São Luís with the capital, and the whole map is framed by the water that surrounds it.
