Cúcuta lies in a hot valley in the department of Norte de Santander, only a few kilometres from the Venezuelan border. The Pamplonita River runs through the metropolitan area from south to north, and the city spreads across the flat ground on both sides, with dry hills rising to the west.
The centre was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1875, and its streets follow a clear grid of numbered calles and avenidas around the main park. Wide tree-lined avenues and roundabouts connect the core to outer neighbourhoods, and the metropolitan area continues into neighbouring towns such as Villa del Rosario and Los Patios.
Villa del Rosario, just to the south, is where the Congress of Cúcuta met in 1821 to draft the constitution of Gran Colombia. A Cúcuta map poster shows a city shaped by its position on a frontier, with roads leading to the border bridges over the Táchira River and a grid that reflects its rebuilding.
The river winds through the metropolitan area from south to north, a soft curving line that divides the city's otherwise regular blocks.
Rebuilt after the 1875 earthquake, the centre follows a tidy pattern of numbered streets and avenues arranged around a main park.
Roads run east toward the Táchira River and the bridges into Venezuela, which have long shaped the city's trade and daily life.

For Cucuteños at home and abroad, this map shows a city they know by its grid, its heat and its closeness to the border. It makes a fitting gift for families with roots on both sides of that line.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates with a name, a neighbourhood or a significant date. The map is available in five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and Sand reflects the warm valley well.
